Laura Hensfield is a visual artist exploring the ecologies of human emotion, the monstrous body and its reflections in nature.
Working across painting, sculpture and installation, Hensfield’s practice is informed by memory and what remains after the body goes through a period of transformation, including the artists own experiences of motherhood, postnatal depression, menopause and ageing. Her work also draws on queer ecology and alternative ways of being, exploring how human experience is entangled with the wider living world rejecting patriarchal and binary perspectives.
Much of the work explores the relationship between human emotion and imagined landscapes, using colour, texture and layers to create unstable spaces between the organic and the abstract. The works exists in a continual state of flux. Forms briefly become recognisable before dissolving again, as if caught mid-transformation. Forms emerge, shift and dissolve, responding to the surrounding environment and the artist’s own emotional state at any given moment.
Hensfield was born in Hampshire, UK, and grew up surrounded by the New Forest’s natural beauty. She studied at the University of Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey, and Chelsea School of Art in London. Hensfield has exhibited nationally and internationally. She now lives and works in Surrey.
